Response to Jenny Denooyer’s Blog: Full House

January 4th, 2010 by samanthavanderlugt

I agree with Jenny when she says, “A lot of times we refuse to own up to our problems.”  That is 100% true. Just like Danny wanted to change  things in every room, to make it different, he didn’t want to admit that he missed Vicky, so he thought by changing  things he would not miss her and things would get better. This change was only in his favor for a while, the fact that it made him not think about Vicky so much, and everything was changed around and didn’t remind him of her so much. But for the other people living in the household, it was a  difficult change, everything was in a different place and harder for everyone. This happens in our everyday life, when we experience a hardship, we tend to want  change or something that will make us feel better and not remind us  of our past.

Exodus 10:19 (first part) “And the LORD changed the wind to a very strong west wind.” This reminds me of what Danny did in his house, he changed everything and  move it around, kind like the west wind moved everything. And in the end of this episode, everything gets changed back to normal life in the  Tanner household!

TV: 16 and Pregnant: “Farrah’s Story”

December 8th, 2009 by samanthavanderlugt

Subject:

This episode was about a sixteen year old cheerleader, named Farrah. She is pregnant, and she need to figure out if she wants to keep the baby abort it or give it up for adoption. When the time is right, Farrah decides to tell her cheerleading squad about her situation. They responded differently than she expected. Whenever they got together as a squad, Farrah felt that she was not at all who she used to be and she was treated way differently. Farrah was extremely mad that people were talking about her being pregnant behind her back, even her closest friends.  Not only did she face difficulties at school, she also had problems at her own home, with her parents. Since Farrah’s mom is a complete control freak, she tries to convince Farrah that the baby is going to be to much of a burden and she won’t be able to handle it. Since her mom was a control freak before, it has caused Farrah to get into more trouble that what  could have been. In the end, Farrah has Baby Sophia, and she loves her, even though it’s quite an adjustment, she sacrifices things like spending time with friends, to take care of Sophia, because it would be hard to ask her mom since she said she would take almost complete responsibility.

Content:

The thesis of this episode is, when you get into trouble you have to look at what you are giving and gaining. In Farrah’s story, she gives up many  things, but when she has her precious Sophia, she realizes that it will be a journey  but it will all be worth it. One example in real life, that is told many times is enjoy your life being married before having kids, because once you have kids you have resposibilities for them and they make life more busy. In Farrah’s story, she is forced to do things differently since she is pregnant, like she quits the cheerleading team, and she quits school to go to a different school, like a college that allows her to take most of her classes online.  Farrah’s pregnancy makes people think of her  way differently even her own family.

Evaluation:

Even though pregnancy before marriage is not how Christians believe things should happen, it happens. According to Christians, we believe that it’s not right to have sex before marriage. But Christian’s also believe that  mistakes happen, and we can be forgiven if we ask for it. It’s is shown every day, that the actions and mistakes we make one day, will have consequences following. Even though Farrah made a mistake, she is going to face the consequence, but she will be truly blessed by it! In Matthew 7, Jesus talks about how people are judged. “He says not to judge – that it is God’s job to judge not ours.” In Farrah’s story she is judged by her teammates, classmates, and family. so even though this is the opposite of what these people did, they  can learn a lesson, by not judging people for the mistake they made, because there is a reason for everything.

Response to Marta’s Blog

November 20th, 2009 by samanthavanderlugt

When Marta said that the main point was sacrificing for who you love, that is totally a big part of the movie. This is present in the movie, but also in our everyday lives. In the movie, Marlin and Coral, had many eggs, and in the process of waiting for them to be born, they were eaten. One survived. This one egg is a very good example of sacrificing for the ones you love. The parents loved each and every egg, and when they were eaten, they were gone, and they were left with only one. Even though it wasn’t by choice, they sacrified every egg but one, and they were blessed with Nemo! When Nemo goes to school, he goes on an adventure and meets Dory, and through everything Dory sacrificed certain thing because he wanted to keep Nemo safe because he loved him!  Nemo never realized how much his dad loved him until he found out he would travel to save him, and how much he would sacrifice to save him. Everyday we face situation where we sacrifice things for the people we love whether it be our friends or family.

In  Ephesians 5:2 it says, “and live a life of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.” This verse means we need to be more like God, and live a life of love and sacrifice! God did that for us we need to spread that and do the same for people we face everyday!

Final: A Walk to Remember

Subject:

This movie was about a girl with Leukemia who falls in love a bad boy. This movie takes place in a small town in the south. Landon Carter is the big hot shot on school campus at Beaufort High School. And Jamie Sullivan is the conservative, religious, plain-Jane daughter of the town’s Baptist minister. Landon was forced to join the schools drama club and that is where he met Jamie. As the two work together they begin to fall in love. It was hard for Landon at first because his popularity dropped because he started to hang out with Jamie. Jamie struggled with her strict father and a secret that she kept from all of her classmates. Once the relationship between Jamie and Landon grew Jamie died of a Leukemia Cancer.

Content:

I think the thesis of  this movie is ” how big events can change your life” Once Landon joined the Drama club his feelings towards Jamie changed as well as his personality. Landon began to accept Jamie even though she wasn’t popular and her dad was the town minister. He began to fall in love with her and his relationship with her strengthened before he even knew about her cancer. Landon changed who he was with one girl because he really loved her. If someone liked you or talked to you because they knew you were going to die it might not be a real or trustworthy relationship but if someone loves you for who you do not know that you might die then you know how much they care about you. Jamie was afraid that Landon would fall in love with her. And she didn’t want him to fall in love with her because she was getting sicker and didn’t know how much longer she would live. Because Landon was forced to join the Drama club he was stubborn and didn’t want to cooperate but instead of his Drama club being a disaster it turned into something pretty amazing he met a girl who he started to love. This changed his life because now he was no longer the bad boy who was mean to people he was a good kid who was a lot nicer.

Evaluation:

I believe the thesis of A Walk to Remember connects to biblical references, because in the Bible Jesus never judged the people that would come up to him for healing. And in a way Jamie in the movie symbolizes Jesus because she didn’t turn away from Landon. She was willing to help Landon and was kind to him. Landon represents people in the bible who ask for forgiveness because they have done bad things in their lives. Even though Landon didn’t see the Drama club as a good thing it turned into a good thing. The truth is that anyone can change, but it won’t be easy. People have to be willing to change their way of living. And in Landon’s case he had to become more serious and abide by rules that Jamie’s father made. In Genesis 35:2 (New International Version) “So Jacob said to his household and to all who were with him, “Get rid of the foreign gods you have with you, and purify yourselves ad change your clothes.” This passage tells how you have to change things in your life to make friendship between people. In Proverbs 12:26 it says “A righteous man is cautious in friendship, but the way of the wicked leads them astray.” At the beginning of the movie Landon is lost and was lead astray, but towards the end e found a stable friendship with Jamie in which he was able to balance his life out a little more. In Genesis 9:2 it says “The fear and dread of you will fall upon all the beasts of the earth and all the birds of the air, upon every creature that moves along the ground, and upon all the fish of the sea; they are given into your hands.” This reminded me of how Jamie was filled with fear because she didn’t want people to know she had cancer. She was afraid and fear comes from the devil. It is often hard for people to be honest with one another because they are scared of the possible outcomes that may occur after a situation.

Response to Hailey’s Post: “I’ll Stand By You”

October 22nd, 2009 by samanthavanderlugt

I agree with Hailey when she says the main point of this song is loyalty. Loyalty is the state or quality of being loyal; faithfulness to commitments or obligations. And in this song while to one friend is in pain and needs someone to help her through the other friend is there standing by her side willing to help and comfort her.

I’ll stand by you
I’ll stand by you
Won’t let nobody hurt you
I’ll stand by you”

I think that  this song it really how human are with each other. When something goes wrong for someone special in our  life, we are always there the stand by them, no matter what the situation. In Hebrews 13:5 it says, “5Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said,
”Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.”
And the second part of that verse where it says “God had said, “never will i leave you; never will i forsake you.” that relates to how in this song, when  we feel alone and hurt, our friend will be by our side and stand  by and will never leave you. Also God will guide us, just like your friend would  guide is through our  difficult situation.

I’ll Walk By Bucky Covington

Subject:

This song is about a couple that is dating, and they get in a fight. The couple are in the car after prom.  The girl decides she needs to walk alone, and be away from her boyfriend. At this points she feels hurt, she need to be along and she will talk to him later. I’ll Walk.

We were 18, it was prom night
We had our first big fight
She said “pull this car over”
I did and then I told her
“I don’t know what you are crying for”
I grabbed her hand and she reached for the door
She said. . .

“I’ll walk
Let go of my hand
Right now I’m hurt
And you don’t understand
So just be quiet
And later we will talk
Just leave, don’t worry
I’ll walk”

It was a dark night, a black dress
Driver never saw her around the bend
I never will forget the call
Or driving to the hospital
Where they told me her legs still wouldn’t move
I cried when I walked into her room
She said. . .

“I’ll walk
Please come and hold my hand
Right now I hurt
And I don’t understand
Let’s just be quiet
And later we can talk
Please stay, don’t worry
I’ll walk”

I held her hand through everything
The weeks and months of therapy
And I held her hand and asked her to be my bride
She’s dreamed from a little girl
To have her daddy bring her down the aisle
So from her wheelchair she looks up at him and smiles
and says. . .

“I’ll walk
Please hold my hand
I know that this will hurt
I know you understand
Please, Daddy don’t cry
This is already hard
Let’s go, don’t worry
I’ll walk”

Content:

The couple was in a big fight. She decided she needed time alone, so she leaves. The boy tries to work things out, but she gets out of the car and leaves. As she walks away, he drives away. She gets hit by a car while walking. She is in the hospital. Her boyfriends gets the call, and goes to see her right away. As he walks into the room, he cries, he sees his girlfriend in pain and is hurt, because she is hurt. She said “I’ll Walk, Please come hold my hand.” Earlier in the song, when they were in their fight, she didn’t want him to be there, but now through the pain and the suffering of her legs not being able to move, she needs him for comfort. He is there through everything. All the time it took for her to get in a better state of wellness, physically and mentally. Later on, he ask her to marry him, and she says yes. While walking down the aisle in the wedding, she looked up at her dad and smiled, even through this moment was sad, cause she couldn’t walk, she said to her dad, “I’ll Walk, Please hold my hand, I know this will hurt, I know you understand, Please Daddy don’t cry, This is already hard, Let’s go, Don’t Worry, I’ll Walk.” So this is the point where this is not how things should be in a wedding, because he needs to carry her down the aisle from her wheelchair, but she looks at him and says, “I’ll Walk”  So she believes she has the strength to walk, but still needs support from her father.

Evaluation:

I think this song relates to how humans are with God at times in our life, during certain situations. Human always come to a point in life, where we believe we don’t feel God, and he is not real to us. So we feel we can do it on our own. “I’ll Walk, Let go of my hand, Right now I’m hurt, And you don’t understand, So just be quiet, And later we will talk, Just leave, Don’t Worry, I’ll Walk.” This part in the song relates how we can be will God, we can feel like he is just another person in our life, just like our friends. You feel like he may be another obstacle you need to get around. Later someday, you will find you need him and come back and talk to him. You will just walk on your path you believe is right. In Deuteronomy 31:6 it says, “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the LORD your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.” And in the song, the boyfriend leaves because she wanted him to, but in reality he was still there, and was going to be either way. When we want God to leave, he never does, he is always by us, and he will never leave us, no matter what our circumstances are. This song is true in reality because when we feel like we need time alone, we take it, and we walk alone, but in reality we will never be alone, because we will always have God!
