TV Blog on One Tree Hill

May 19th, 2009 by meganphilipp

One Tree Hill is about a group of friends that have been together ever since high school. It has been running for about eight seasons. I watch the episode on May 4, 2009 for this blog. This show shows the characters everyday and how they handle problems that they face. In this episode Nathan has gotten a second chance to impress a scout after getting in a fight and being paralyzed for a six months. Brooke has to let her foster child Sam go live with her real mom who never really wanted to give her up. Also Lucas and Payton are going to have a baby and get married, but Payton has a condition that makes it dangerous to have the baby, but they still are.

In this show there are a lot of little t truths. One would be that you always do what is best for your family. Nathan and Haley, who are married often are very good that this. They are always looking out for Jamie’s (their son) best interest. For example Nathan has given up certain basketball opportunities to stay close to his son and wife. Haley has also given up her singing career to take care of Jamie. Another little t truth would be that you should always be there for your friends. No one wants to see their friends down and out so we try to help them. In this show they are always encouraging each other to the right thing. For example because of Payton’s condition Lucas is scared. But, Nathan his friend and step brother comes and give him the advice and says would you rather fight with Payton about a silly thing with Payton, like getting married now sooner than later or would you like to spend your possible last days having fun and being together. Nathan helps his friend see what is important in life.

This is not a Christian show but there are plenty of big t truths. For example, Brooke took Sam in to her house after she robbed Brooke’s store and she as spray painted Payton’s wedding dress. She showed kindness and love towards Sam just like Jesus says to turn the other cheek. Brooke also is letting Sam go live with her real mom even though she doesn’t want her too. Brooke also shows selflessness by doing this. Another big t truth would be earlier in another season Haley and Nathan were thinking about getting divorced, but then they decided to stay together. They realized that once you make a decision to marry someone you will always and forever be together. The last big t truth would be the idea that you should always be looking out for others before yourself. Payton does a great job with this. She is worried about everyone else even though she could die after she has her baby. She puts herself aside and thinks about others all the time.

Response to Azusa’s TV blog

May 14th, 2009 by meganphilipp

Azusa’s tv blog was very good. I liked how she brought out the concept of that you can always work through hard times, when you have your family around. They have your best intrest in mind and will always look out fcr you no matter what you have done. Like in Full House the children always come to Uncle Joey or Uncle Jesse if they can not talk about it with their dad. They help each other solve problems like sibling rivalries and can always give great advice. I also think that this family really does show that you can get through anything with family because Danny loses his wife, but Joey, Jesse, or Rebeca are always their to help him out around the house or with the girls. I liked Azusa’s comment about how we can not do anything with God’s help. We can not rely on ourselves to make bad situations turn good and we do not have the smallest bit of power that God has. If we did not need God then why would we even have this faith called Christianity. We would all just have to listen to ourselves and make our own decisions. We always need God no matter what. We may not think that we need him, but after we try to do something by ourselves we always come back to God.

Comment on Kaitlyn Kloosterman’s movie blog

April 22nd, 2009 by meganphilipp

Harry Potter is a very complicated movie to analyze and Kaitlyn did a great job. I like her value and belief aboutbravery. She talked about how we today also value bravery. We show this by honoring fall soliders and police officers or fire fighters. I have never really thought about that value and belief in the movie Harry Potter. I also liked the value about friendship in Harry Potter. Harry is all about his two best friends and will do anything to help them out. This does often happen in our society because we give our best friends friendship bracelets or keychains. These items represent the commitment that we are willing to give to one or two people.  Will often vow to never forget our best friends in high school. I also liked the comment about there is not good verses evil but their is just power. I think that is true. Many things are more about power than the actual good verses evil. Good people or evil people really do not want to be good or evil, they just want to have more power or the other people. It is always about the power grab rather than i’m evil and your good. Finally, liked her idea that it does not really matter how hard satan fights to win us over, we  are already saved because Jesus died on the cross for us.

Slumdog Millionaire Movie Blog

April 6th, 2009 by meganphilipp
Subject:

Slumdog Millionaire is about the life of Jamal Malik. He has grown up in the slums of India and witnessed some horrific sites. His mother was murdered, his brother murdered a man, he almost had is eyes taken out with a spoon, and he now has the chance to win twenty million rupees (India’s currency) on the famous show Who wants to be a Millionaire. No one can figure out how a slumdog can answer these questions right, so they think he is cheating. He is then taken hostage by the police and questioned about how he got the answers. As he is questioned he goes through flash backs of his life and is saddened because he can not find Latika, his life long friend, who he has also fallen in love with.

Content:

The biggest little t truth presented in this movie is the idea that there really are slums in India. This movie shows the true struggles that people have when they are living in poverty. Also with poverty comes things like abuse and neglect. Another little t truth is that everyone wants to have the American dream. We all want to have a good life, family, and wealth. This is why people want to get on Who Wants to be a Millionaire, so that they can get out of their current situation. The finally little t truth would be that giving up is never an option. If you truly believe that you can change a situation around, then you can never give up.

Evaluation:

As a Christian I can learn a lot form these young kids who live in the slums. Even though they are in poverty they could not be any happier. They do not care that they do not have any toys like us, they know how to have fun with ordinary things like a stick or their imaginations. As Christians in America this concept of coveting worldly things is very hard for us to get over, but we need too in order to live our lives to the fullest with no chains. Another big t truth is that we watch Salim say “God forgive me” before he kills someone, but do not we do the same thing. We may not kill someone but we often offend someone or we talk behind that person’s back. We know that we are not suppose to be doing this but we continue on with what we are doing. Are we that much different than Salim?

Comments on Kristen Herder’s music blog

I think that Kristen interpreted the song very well. I liked the point about how it is so easy to blame God for all of the bad things that happen to us. As humans we need to blame someone, and God is the easiest because he really does not fight back. Yes he is very hurt when we think that he would do anything to hurt us but he has no desire to physically or verbally get back at us like a friend or family member probably would. I also think that we do not necessarily connect “secular” bands with God or Christianity. Just like Kristen said she was surprised that this was a “secular” group writing a whole song about an issue that had to do with anything religious. As we have now talked about in class there are plenty of bands in the “secular” music industry that are Christians and write about God in their songs. I think that if a band like the Fray can be Christians and popular in this type of music world, there is hope that those who do not know Jesus will know him because all the Christians in the “secular” music world.

I Don’t Want to Be By Gavin DeGraw

March 10th, 2009 by meganphilipp

In this song the central theme is that you should stand up for who you are. You should not let the world tell you who to be or what to do. It is your life so be who you want to be. It also says that you do not have to be someone famous or popular, you just need to be yourself. You do not need to care what other people think of you, do what pleases God.

One of the little t truths would go with this line from the song, “I’m surrounded by liars, everywhere I turn.” Everyone knows that someone has lied to them in their life and they also have lied sometime in their life. We can not escape lying. Also there is always that one person in our school is trying to fit in. They seem to be having an identity crisis and think that they need to change there who look. They do not want to be themselves. We’ve all had a moment like this and then we realize that we just need to be ourselves. In our society we see this picture that we need to be a certain way. We look at all the magazines with models and with the celebrities and they tell us to eat this or dress like that, but we should really be finding our own style.

I think there is a huge big t truth staring us in the face in this song. God did not create us to all be like one another he created us so that we could have our own special and unique talents. We need to glorify him with the talents he gave us. I think that we get caught up in this big t truth and do not realize it. We may be thinking that we are doing the right thing, but is it the way God wants us tot go. We need to show everyone else that it does not matter what title you have as long as you are trying to do your best for God and not for other people. A good Bible verse to go with this would be Genesis 1:27 “God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him;” God created us like him so that we could all be different. He wants all of us to follow him, but in different ways with our own unique talents he has given us.

I don’t need to be anything other than a prison guard’s son
I don’t need to be anything other than a specialist’s son
I don’t have to be anyone other than the birth of two souls in one
Part of where I’m going is knowing where I’m coming from

(Chorus)
I don’t want to be anything other than what I’ve been trying to be lately
All I have to do is think of me and I've peace of mind
I’m tired of looking ‘round rooms wondering what I gotta do
Or who I’m supposed to be
I don’t want to be anything other than me

I’m surrounded by liars everywhere I turn
I’m surrounded by imposters everywhere I turn
I’m surrounded by identity crisis everywhere I turn
Am I the only one to notice?
I can’t be the only one who’s learned

(Chorus)
I don’t want to be anything other than what I’ve been trying to be lately
All I have to do is think of me and I'd be somebody
I’m tired of looking ‘round rooms wondering what I gotta do
Or who I’m supposed to be
I don’t want to be anything other than me

Can I have everyone’s attention please
If you're not like this and that
You’re gonna have to leave
I came from the mountain, the crust of creation
My whole situation made from clay to stone
And now I’m telling everybody

(Chorus)
I don’t want to be anything other than what I’ve been trying to be lately
All I have to do is think of me and I've peace of mind
I’m tired of looking ‘round rooms wondering what I gotta do
Or who I’m supposed to be
I don’t want to be anything other than me
I don’t want to be
I don’t want to be
I don’t want to be

I don’t want to be
